DeLand, FL – The Volusia County Elections Office is busy today with the finish work after the Primary Election and already beginning preparations for the General Election on November 3. Volusia County Supervisor of Elections Lisa Lewis says the total voter turnout, mail-in ballot, early voting and voting on election day itself, is 27.93 percent. She said that for a primary, the percentage is usually 23 to 25. Voter turnout, specifically by mail-in ballot, was much higher than usual, according to Lewis. She says that as of today (August 19), 71,237 mail-in ballots have been accepted and tabulated. "Our biggest before for a primary, the primary of 2018, was at 47,000. We mailed out right at 136,000, so, yeah, we received over half." A total of 106,633 votes were cast in Volusia County. The number of Republican ballots is 46,040, Democrats have 43,479, and non-partisan ballots numbered 17,114. Lewis says there are about 345 ballots that needed to be "cured," which means the voter either didn’t sign their ballot or their signature is not the same as what’s on file. There’s just a little more than ten weeks until the General Election and Lewis wants people who are not registered yet to know that they have until October 5 to do so. "If you want to vote by mail, go-ahead and request it. We’re going to be mailing those out between September 24 and October 1. Our early voting sites will be open beginning October 19, running through November 1. And, of course, election day. Please be aware of polling place changes." Lewis said that they are losing three polling places for the General Election and those affected will receive notice in the mail.
