23-year-old Nicholas Gant has been charged in a shooting that took place early Sunday morning in Oak Hill. The bullet reportedly grazed its target in the head, a detail initially missed by law enforcement when they responded to the scene. According to the VSO, Gant was at a party on Flamingo Road in Oak Hill when the incident occurred. The background of the shooting is unclear, and no prior dispute was revealed when the VSO made their announcement. After Gant allegedly fired the shot, the victim was said to have charged at him and stabbed him in the stomach. The VSO has not announced whether there may be any charges against the victim for the stabbing, but the case for self defense may be a likely refuge given the nature of the altercation. Once the VSO responded, Gant was airlifted and admitted to the hospital to be treated for his stabbing wounds. He was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon before investigators discovered the grazing wound on the victim’s head. Once they did, his charge was amended to aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Gant has one prior arrest record in Volusia County’s inmate database, when he was charged in 2022 with leaving the scene of a crash involving damages.
