The Volusia Sheriff’s Office have arrested 32-year-old Daytona Beach resident Trevin Smith in connection to an Ormond Beach woman’s fentanyl overdose death on Wednesday morning. The arrest occurred the same day as the victim’s death. According to a statement on the investigation by the VSO, the agency’s Overdose Task Force was examining the 35-year-old victim’s phone in the aftermath of her passing. Text messages were reportedly found in which the victim communicated with Smith to purchase fentanyl. Detectives communicated with Smith pretending to be the victim, arranging to meet at a 7-Eleven convenience store in Ormond Beach to conduct a drug sale. Smith did meet at the 7-Eleven at the time planned out. He was said to have tried running away, but deputy bodycam footage shows Smith being arrested on the floor of the store in front of the coffee bar. While allegedly running, he was also said to have thrown away his cell phone and a small bag of fentanyl. A K9 unit was dispatched and assisted in Smith’s arrest. He was handcuffed and transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail, on charges of possession of heroin with intent to sell, child neglect, obstruction of an officer without violence, driving with a suspended license, and unlawful usage of a two-way communication device. He was denied bond. The discrepancy between the report of Smith selling fentanyl versus his booking record listing heroin is unclear as of Friday morning. Prior to Wednesday’s arrest, Smith has had several past bookings at the Volusia County Branch Jail. Charges include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, domestic battery, grand theft, fleeing and eluding, and reckless driving among others. Pending further charges, Smith could eventually face a sentence of up to life in prison upon conviction if he’s found to have sold narcotics that led to a death.
