The Volusia Ready Response Corps (VRRC) drew out over 50 residents at their first gathering, the Volusia County government announced on Tuesday. The volunteer group was assembled in order to strengthen the area’s readiness in times of natural disaster. An open house event was held on June 5th at the Volusia County Emergency Operations Center in Daytona Beach. Those in attendance were given tours of the facility, a look at how emergency response staff operate during a crisis, and an overview of the difference that can be made by volunteers in worst-case scenarios. “By stepping forward today, you’ve made a commitment that truly matters to your community,” said Volusia Community Services Director Brad Burbaugh. “When disaster strikes, you’ll be the hands that help, the voices that comfort, and the strength that helps our county rebuild.” The disaster preparation for those in attendance doesn’t end with last week’s gathering. Throughout this year those who volunteered are going to receive training to respond to situations such as severe storms or hurricanes and wildfires. Even routine weather phenomenons such as heat waves and cold fronts have the potential to necessitate the services of volunteer responders. Those interested in volunteering can do so by visiting the organization’s website, by calling (386) 943-7039, or by emailing sbaker@volusia.org. Time commitment is flexible, and volunteers from a wide array of backgrounds and skill sets are welcome to apply.
