At long last, Volusia County residents won’t be required to drive to the Orlando area if they want to shop at Trader Joe’s. The supermarket chain with a cult following finally opened its new location in Daytona Beach on Friday, ushering in guests to satiate their long-simmering anticipation. The new Trader Joe’s is located at 1507 Cornerstone Boulevard, part of the Tomoka Town Center shopping area. Shoppers need only drive a short distance from the I-95 exit at LPGA Blvd, the same vicinity of Tanger Outlets and Buc-ee’s. Trader Joe’s itself is situated just across the way from the Ford’s Garage restaurant, not far from Academy Sports & Outdoors. Trader Joe’s was founded in 1958 as Pronto Markets near Los Angeles, before first using its now-iconic name in Pasadena. It’s named for founder Joe Coulombe, who originally founded the brand to compete with 7-Eleven convenience stores. Coulombe remained CEO of Trader Joe’s until 1988, and passed away at 89 years old in 2020. Today Trader Joe’s has over 600 locations in the United States, with an estimated workforce of over 50,000. Just in the last week the company has held store openings in Arizona, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, and Washington in addition to their Daytona Beach debut.
