A new housing unit in DeLand broke ground on Tuesday, the Volusia County government announced. The New York Avenue Apartments are now under construction in downtown DeLand, located at 225 W. New York Ave. Once completed, the apartment complex will have 84 new housing units. The county describes the project as an effort to “support ongoing efforts to expand housing opportunities across the community”. Construction is being managed by Blue Sky Communities, with an estimated completion date in 2027. Furthermore, the county hopes that the New York Avenue Apartments will be an important step in bringing back affordable housing that was lost in some of the recent hurricanes that have swept through the area. Income-eligible families will move into this new complex once it’s completed, including 13 units for those working to transition out of homelessness. Part of the funding for the complex comes from Volusia County’s Transform386 initiative, which receives federal funding. Additional funds come from federal and state contributions to HOME, HOME-ARP, and SHIP programs. These are administered by the Volusia County Community Assistance Division. Under Transform386, four multi-family housing projects have been approved to increase workforce housing in areas that could most benefit from increased workforce stability. The New York Avenue Apartments are the second of those four.
