A suspect in a DeLand burglary has been identified and arrested based on fingerprint evidence, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office announced on Friday. 55-year-old Steven Shurr is accused of breaking into a local church and stealing multiple items. Deputies were called to the DeLand Spanish SDA Church on Friday, August 21 after a reported break-in. An investigation of the scene indicated a door was pried open and a window was broken. Inside, multiple TV screens were stolen off the wall. Speakers were also taken, along with ‘other items’, the VSO says. A fingerprint was found on one of the TV mounts that was still inside the church. It was analyzed by the VSO Latent Print Unit who matched the print to Steven Shurr. According to the VSO, Shurr does not attend the Spanish SDA Church and would have no explanation for his fingerprints being on the TV mount. Though he’s a resident of Lake County, the VSO says Shurr was staying just a quarter mile away from the church at the time of the burglary. Shurr was arrested on a Volusia County warrant Thursday by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. He’s been charged with grand theft with damage over $1,000. As of Monday he remains in custody on no bond. Prior to this incident Shurr has four arrests on record in Volusia County. Charges from these bookings include grand theft, burglary, trespassing, violation of probation, and driving with a suspended license. Shurr has served four years in prison already on charges from other burglary incidents.
