The Volusia County Animal Shelter will waive adoption fees for three days as a celebration of one year operating, the county government announced Wednesday. The fees will be waived from Thursday, October 1 to Saturday, October 3. For the three days that the celebration is in effect, those adopting pets can do so while saving a few dollars. The shelter is located at 2120 E. International Speedway Blvd in DeLand, taking in stray and abused animals from unincorporated Volusia County, Oak Hill, and Pierson. The shelter first opened its doors on October 1, 2025. Since then over 250 animals have been given new homes through adoption, over 250 lost pets have been reunited with their owners, and almost 200 animals have been placed in partner rescues. Over 70 animals have been moved into foster care, and over 130 animals have been sheltered following investigations into animal cruelty or following the death, hospitalization, or incarceration of their owners. “This first year has shown just how important this shelter is to both the animals we serve and our community,” said Volusia County Animal Services Director Angela Miedema. “Our team has cared for animals in critical condition, supported cruelty investigations, safely housed dangerous dogs under investigation, and helped hundreds of animals find their way home or to new families. I’m incredibly proud of the compassion our team brings to this work every day and all that we’ve accomplished together.”
