The Volusia Sheriff’s Office on Friday arrested 68-year-old Juan Antonio Huertas Figueroa for first degree murder in connection to a shooting at a DeLand apartment complex earlier that day. Figueroa has been in custody at the Volusia County Branch Jail without bond ever since. A 911 call was placed at around 11:22 am on Friday to 2744 Botts Landing Road, an apartment complex near the Riviera Resort & Marina just west of Lake Beresford. Deputies were told of a domestic dispute involving three people: Huertas Figueroa, his girlfriend, and her ex-boyfriend: a man identified as 42-year-old Christopher Wooldridge. Huertas Figueroa and his girlfriend were said to have had an altercation on Thursday that had become physical. Law enforcement wasn’t called at the time. On Friday, the girlfriend reportedly got in touch with Wooldridge to come pick her up. When he got to the scene, Huertas Figueroa is said to have told him to leave. Another confrontation ensued from there, which reportedly ended with Huertas Figueroa shooting Wooldridge multiple times. Wooldridge was reported to have been in an argument with the girlfriend, which led to Huertas Figueroa shooting him in the head, the chest, and the hand. Wooldridge was pronounced deceased at the scene. The VSO didn’t provide extensive details about the nature of the investigation, but did confirm that Huertas Figueroa was charged with first degree murder based on probable cause, and that he was arrested promptly. Prior to this arrest, Huertas Figueroa has no other arrests on record in the Volusia County Branch Jail.
