A woman in Daytona Beach was tragically killed after being attacked by dogs within her home, the Daytona Beach Police Department has confirmed. 38-year-old Monica Emerson was found dead on Friday. According to a description of the incident by the DBPD, officers were called on Friday at around 7:11 pm. The caller was the victim’s boyfriend, who told police he found her unresponsive after entering her home. He came to check on her after being unable to reach her by phone. Once the boyfriend went inside, police say, he discovered Emerson on the floor and unresponsive. She had wounds which police later determined were consistent with dog attacks. There were four dogs present in the home: one ‘large adult male’ and three adult offspring of that male, police said. Still, police gave some indication that the attack may not have been a random act of viciousness from the dogs. The DBPD said that Emerson may have had a medical incident which caused her to lose consciousness. It was only at this point that the dogs fatally attacked her in the scenario described. The dogs were taken into custody after the incident by the DBPD’s Animal Control Services. They’re to be held by Volusia County Animal Control Services for ten days after being possessed before being euthanized. Meanwhile, Emerson’s next-of-kin have been notified of her passing. There is no suspicion of foul play or any direct role in her killing by other people. Grisly as it may be, it’s also not uncommon for pets to consume parts of their owners in cases where they pass away inside the home. First responders have often found this to have occurred when the owner remained deceased inside the home for long periods of time, when no other food is available to the animals. The behavior has been observed in both dogs and cats. It’s not clear whether Emerson in particular was deceased before the dogs attacked her body.
