The groundbreaking on a new fire station in Volusia County is set for early next month, the county government announced Tuesday. Fire Station 15 in Daytona Beach will be rebuilt starting on Thursday, April 2. The project will be moving the existing Fire Station 15 from Tiger Bay Road to Red John Road in Daytona Beach. This new facility will be 17,000 square feet with dedicated living quarters, bunk rooms and a day room, emergency vehicle bays, and operational space for a full-service fire station. When it’s operational, the new Fire Station 15 will serve ‘unincorporated Volusia County and the Daytona Beach area’, the county said in their announcement of the groundbreaking. It will be home to the Volusia County Hazardous Materials Response Team, a crew which will serve the entirety of the county. “This is an investment in both our firefighters and the communities they protect,” said Fire Chief Joe King. “The new station positions our crews to respond faster and more effectively, while also freeing up the Fire Training Center to expand countywide training programs.” The Red John Road location was chosen for the response times and area that can be covered, the county said. A construction contract of $12,811,201 was awarded to Sanford-based contractor Wharton-Smith Inc. by the Volusia County Council on January 20. Construction timelines and additional details are said to be coming at a later date. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Fire Station 15 will be held on Thursday, April 2 at 10:00 a.m. at 1159 Red John Road in Daytona Beach.
