The Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet has purchased a new $35,000 ultrasound system, the Volusia County government announced on Tuesday. The purchase was made possible thanks to donations to an accompanying nonprofit organization. The Friends of the Marine Science Center has been raising money for months to support the Center’s veterinary capabilities. Now, thanks to their fundraising, researchers and veterinarians at the Marine Science Center are more well-equipped than before to provide care for marine life that enters the facility’s care. “We’re grateful for the continued dedication shown by the Friends of the Marine Science Center and those who support their efforts,” said Marine Science Director Chad Macfie. “That support translates into real, day-to-day improvements in how we diagnose and care for the animals that come through our doors, ultimately helping us give more wildlife the opportunity to recover and return to their natural environment.” Using their new ultrasound system, scientists at the Marine Science Center will be able to examine soft tissue and internal organs of marine animals without performing surgery. For injured animals such as sea turtles, this can be a crucial way to diagnose and create plans of care with minimal negative impact to the specimens. “We are so grateful to every person who donates, shares and supports our mission,” the Friends of the Marine Science Center posted to their official Facebook page on Thursday. “This is a direct result of a community that truly cares about protecting and rehabilitating sea turtles right here in Volusia County.”
