Flagler Schools has been named a Guy Harvey Conservation District for the 2025-26 school year, the organization announced this week. The honor is bestowed upon school districts who show “commitment to environmental education through teacher professional development, experiential learning and environmental leadership”. A presentation will be given on Tuesday, May 19 laying out what made Flagler Schools a recipient of the award. The Guy Harvey Foundation, a nonprofit founded in 2008, identified Flagler County’s school district as a fit with the criteria for their recognition. “We are inspired by the work and commitment of the educators and schools in Flagler Schools that, through the Guy Harvey Conservation Education Program, promote marine science and strengthen conservation education,” said Guy Harvey Foundation CEO Jessica Harvey. The Guy Harvey Foundation was founded by its namesake, a marine wildlife artist and conservation activist. Known for his popular line of fishing apparel, Harvey has become a widely recognized figure for his artistic impact and his work for the preservation of marine wildlife and habitats. Two schools in Flagler County were singled out as Guy Harvey Conservation Schools: Matanzas High School and Wadsworth Elementary School. On top of those, 15 educators from across the district are recognized as Guy Harvey Conservation Educators. “The Guy Harvey curriculum has tremendously impacted Flagler Schools by equipping teachers with engaging training and meaningful marine science resources they can immediately bring back to their classrooms,” said Flagler Schools K-12 Science Curriculum Specialist Heidi Alves. “Our students are developing a deeper understanding of ocean ecosystems and becoming responsible stewards of our marine environment. We are incredibly proud to be recognized as a Guy Harvey Conservation District and to partner in promoting marine science education and environmental stewardship across Flagler Schools.” “The commitment of school systems across the nation dedicated to environmental STEAM education creates a ripple effect as educators become catalysts for positive environmental change in the minds and actions of their students,” Jessica Harvey added. Our goal is to educate and enlighten more than 50 million students and more than five million teachers globally with our educational initiatives.”
