Daytona Beach Shores might soon undergo a name change. The City Commission discussed the concept at a meeting this month, and there’s momentum toward putting the initiative on the ballot this November. If the change passes, Daytona Beach Shores would be renamed ‘The Shores’. According to Madie McCallister, the city’s public information officer, 66% of residents voted in favor of the name change in a recent survey. Almost 550 residents responded. The next step will be for the City Commission to vote on a charter amendment on July 28. That appears likely to pass, as the Commission approved the amendment’s first reading with a unanimous 5-0 vote. If the concept clears that hurdle, the residents of Daytona Beach Shores would vote in November on whether to permanently change the identity of their city. The move would distance Daytona Beach Shores from Daytona Beach, its neighbor to the north. Daytona Beach Shores was incorporated as a city on April 22, 1960. As of the 2020 U.S. census it has a population of 5,179. A name change would cost the city somewhere between $244,000 and $277,000 according to current estimates. Residents would have to pay $6.25 to update their IDs.
